Centre For Entrepreneurship To Be Launched In Katlehong

18 June 2013

The Department of Trade and Industry, in partnership with Ekurhuleni West College, launched the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development at Kathorus Campus on 18 June 2013. The Centre is an initiative  that is geared to promote Entrepreneurship Education, Training and Development.

The Centre is expected to provide training and education to current and old students as well as disadvantaged individuals from the communities around Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality.

In her speech, the Deputy Minister of the dti, Hon Elizabeth Thabethe, said that it is important to note that these Centres share the dti’s vision of supporting economic growth with equity and employment creation and the belief that entrepreneurship promotion is at the core of economic growth stimulation. She ended by saying that this intervention bore evidence to Government's commitment to ensuring that small businesses, and black businesses specifically, progressively increase their participation in the economy and their contribution to the broader development objectives of the country.

Ms Hellen Ntlatleng, the Principal of Ekurhuleni West College, said, "This Centre is for the Community of Kathorus – its success lies in the difference and the impact it will make in their lives. We should be at a stage where we know that the government can’t give all of us jobs – let us change our minds from becoming job seekers to being job creators. The economy of this country lies in our hands. We can also be drivers of change." She furthermore said that it was hoped to build an Incubation Centre in a few years time, and in this way, to contribute to Vision 2030 as outlined in the National Development Plan.

The Deputy Director General for Broadening Participation Division in the dti, Mr Sipho Zikode, made an assurance that the department would assist in the establishment of the incubation programme.

The event programme was directed by Ms Sonia Sedibe and Mr Billy Selekane gave a Motivational Talk.
